This movie was produced on 1987 by Rod Reiner (director/producer). The main actors were Robin Wright (acting as Buttercup), Cary Elwes (acting as Westley) and Fred Savage (acting as a boy). It is based on the novel also called the 'Princess Bride'. The movie was filmed at the United Kingdom and Ireland. I deem that the genre of this movie is romantic adventurous comedy. You'll soon see why.
Let me give you the abbreviated version of the plot. Buttercup falls in love with Westley, a farm boy. Westley leaves to find money for marriage. Prince Humperdinck forces Buttercup to marry him. Vizzini (leader of group), Inigo (the Spanish man), and Fezzik (a giant) kidnaps Buttercup and takes her on a ship. Buttercup tries to escape by jumping off the ship, but the huge eels frighten her so much that it makes her hop back into the ship. Then a ship starts to follow the kidnapper's ship. The kidnappers and Buttercup climbs up the Cliff of Insanity. A black masked man emerged from the ship. He also started to climb. Vizzini orders Inigo to stop him. Inigo and man in black has a duel. The Spainiard lost. Man in black moves on to find Fezzik throwing huge rocks at him. They start to wrestle then Westley chokes Fezzik until the giant blacks out. Then he beats Vizzini in a battle of wits. Man in black runs away with Buttercup while the Prince pursues them. Man in Black gets pushed down the gorge by Buttercup and he says,
"As you wish."
At that moment, Buttercup realized that the man in black was Westley. They faced many ordeals such as Snow Sand, Rodents of Unusual Size and the Fire Swamp. Prince Humperdinck captures them. Buttercup negotiates for Westley to be freed. Westley was tortured on a life-sucking machine instead. Buttercup eventually found out that Prince Humperdinck was torturing Westley and rebels against him, talking about her enduring love for Westley. Humperdinck, enraged, sucks all of Westley's life. Inigo and Fezzik, who became kind, found Westley's dead body. They revived him by taking him to a magician. But Westley was still weak.
Westley composes plans to save Buttercup. Buttercup decided to suicide. Westley saved Buttercup from suiciding. Westley bluffs his way out of a sword fight with Humperdinck.
Inigo, who met Regan, a man who killed his father, starts to duel with Regan. He recited his long-rehearsed oath of vengeance all along. They run away, riding on white horses, which Fezzik had conveniently found.
Now I would like to move on to talk about how Westley was a leader. he devised plans to rescue Buttercup and it worked! He led the team (Inigo and Fezzik). He was not arrogant at all, which made everyone respect him.
As you can guess, the lesson of this movie is that 'True love can overcome any obstacles'. Westley breaking in the palace while Buttercup rebelled against Humperdinck? Yep. True love, alright.
I would like to criticize parts of this movie. The beginning was horrible. It merely consisted of kisses, tears, and long, unbearable stares at each other. It was way too classic. Even classier than Cinderella's beginning.
I wish the movie contained more humor. I think that Humperdinck is a wonderful subject of humor. Talking in the audience's point of view, Humperdinck seemed like a dumb, mean nincompoop to me. It would be very humorous if a tad bit of dumbness was added to Humperdinck.
The movie was not my favorite movie but it was a movie which I could enjoy. I recommend this to couples and families out there.
So this is my opinion and facts about the 'Princess Bride'. Below you can see the characters, and the trailer of the movie. Julie out.
