Dear Director of GLPS,
I am writing this letter to you because of the lack of studying time for students at GLPS.
Let me present to you with two words. Study and sleep. See any relations? Nope, not alliteration. I mean the rate of studying time to sleeping time. Here at GLPS, we are required to sleep at twelve A.M. at the latest. I propose that GLPS participants(students) should be allowed to study during the sleeping period because of three things. Freedom of choice, homework, and common sense.
I do believe that GLPS students should have the freedom of choice to study. GLPS participants are here at KMLA to learn and study the subjects taught at GLPS. They should at least have the freedom of choice to study, which I believe is one of the purposes and the goals of GLPS.
I must say GLPS gives a lot of homework. They only give us 3 hours of study period each day. Is this well balanced? Is three hours sufficient enough for a History of Science presentation preparation? No! Is three hours sufficient enough for vacation homework? No! Is three hours enough to write a piece of creative writing? No! Imagine all the assignments I have mentioned clumped up together and stomped as 'Assignments due tomorrow'. The students would be stressed. They would overwork themselves and the originally high quality of homework would decrease immensely. The grades would drop, the teachers would be disappointed, and the balance would be destroyed. GLPS should not stop our studying.
The participants took two exams before entering GLPS. I believe that those results actually tell the fact that they all have common sense. It is a well known fact that students need sleep. The student knows this as they have common sense. According to Sleep Foundation (http://www.sleepfoundation.org/article/how-sleep-works/how-much-sleep-do-we-really-need), all people have individual amounts of sleep they need and I believe that the students are actually aware of that factor. They will control the amount of sleep they need.
GLPS stands for Global Leadership Program for Students. Leaders are supposed to do more, better work. Is it right for GLPS to stop and restrict the student's efforts to be a leader? This act of stopping studying is an act which contradicts GLPS's purpose. This must stop.
I have made a possible solution for this. Currently the system at GLPS is formed like this.
First study period ---------7:00 PM~9:00PM
Second study period ------10:10 PM~11:40PM
Altogether we only get 3 hours and 30 minutes of study time. This time, I want to develop a third study period which is slightly different.
The third study period would require students to sign up for it, like second study period. But the students would be free to go back to their rooms at any time.It would be slightly more free than the second study period. It would be from twelve o'clock to one o'clock.
I believe and demand the act of restricting students efforts to stop and to create the third study period to the Director. GLPS students should have the freedom to study as much as they want. The parents or the teachers wouldn't have to worry as the kids have common sense and are responsible. It is the time for some adjustments of GLPS!
Thank you for reading this letter and I hope you take this suggestion into consideration.
Yours truly,
Julie Baik
Hi Julie! This is Seungmin!
ReplyDeleteI like your persuasive argument, I totally agree with you that we should be allowed more studying time... I can't seem to finish all my work with the time given! ):
Wow!!! I really agree with you. I hope GLPS Director reads this letter and actually he or she changes the program.
ReplyDeleteJulie,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job presenting your arguments in this letter. You also used research to prove your point which helped convince me to agree with you. Great work!
